A State Constitutional Amendment to Protect Connecticut Farmland

Working Lands Alliance, a project of American Farmland Trust, joins a coalition of conservation groups calling for a constitutional amendment to better protect our state-held conservation and agricultural lands in Connecticut.

The amendment to the Connecticut Constitution seeks to protect these critical public lands from being sold or traded by the state without a more transparent public process and appropriate compensation.

Although many people assume that these state-held forest, park and agricultural lands are permanently protected, they usually are not – leaving them vulnerable to being sold or given away by the legislature through the state's annual Conveyance Act.

The effort in Connecticut is being led by WLA's partner, CT Forest and Park Association, and would follow the lead of states in the region like New York, Maine, and Massachusetts that already have constitutional amendments to provide similar protections to these state lands.
