California Agricultural Land Protection

Utilizing Agricultural Conservation Easements, AFT preserves farm and ranch land in California via our Agricultural Land Protection program.

To fulfill this work, we:

  • Provide direct technical assistance to farmers and landowners interested in pursuing easements through our Farmland Information Center
  • Demonstrate innovative easement practices around the country that can be tailored to a variety of different locations, landowners and project needs
  • Undertake projects in target communities to showcase successful farmland protection efforts and spotlight exemplary conservation practices
  • Support agricultural land trusts and conservation partners in building their capacity to do quality easement projects

In California, AFT maintains 21 easements which include 3,278 acres. Our easements are focused in key geographic areas throughout the state where prime farmland and natural resource conservation is most vital.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, California Department of Conservation, Madera Resource Conservation District and City of Escalon are all important partners in our easement projects. In addition, we are appreciative of the landowners who have donated easements and the people who live and work on our easement protected properties.
