As communities increasingly recognize that new growth and development do not have to come at the expense of farms and farmland, they turn to American Farmland Trust for help. AFT fills a special niche in the land protection and smart growth movements—we utilize our national experience to help communities implement effective solutions to keep farming and ranching viable, limit the impacts of new development and strategically protect the best farmland.

AFT equips communities with the tools and expertise to balance growth while protecting productive farm and ranch land in two ways:

  • on-the-ground projects to help raise awareness, create plans, implement policies and programs and evaluate techniques
  • a clearinghouse and technical assistance service through the Farmland Information Center

Planning for Agriculture
Community planning is not complete without a plan for agriculture. AFT helps develop local, regional and state plans for agriculture that can work alone or be a component of a land use plan.

Fiscal Analysis
To raise awareness about the fiscal and economic benefits of including agricultural land in the mix of land uses, AFT analyzes data to provide important factual information about the often overlooked benefits of working landscapes.

Education & Outreach
As the competition for land in America increases, communities are searching for answers to questions about managing growth and sustaining local agriculture.

Farmland Information Center
