What is the chemistry behind methane digesters?

The chemistry behind methane destruction in a digester:

Burning a molecule of Methane (CH4) in the presence of Oxygen (O2) releases Energy, Water (H2O) , and one molecule of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Since one molecule of Methane is 23 times more powerful than a molecule of Carbon Dioxide, this process leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 96%.

CH4  +  2O2 »  CO2  + 2H2O  +  Energy
