Rhode Island conservation interests protected 3,938 acres of land in FY 03. The agricultural division of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management administers Rhode Island’s state-level farmland protection program. The state, working through its Land Acquisition Program, Local Grants Program and the Agricultural Land Preservation Commission protected 1844 acres in twenty-five separate projects. Of that number, the Agricultural Program protected over 200 acres of important active farmland through the purchase of development rights.
