Tulare County undergoing general plan update - AFT SUbmits comments

Tulare County is the second largest agricultural producing county in the nation.
In 2006, Tulare County’s crops were valued at $3,872,000. There were over forty five commodities valued over $1,000,000.
Tulare County is in the middle of their General Plan Update process and AFT has submitted comments to Tulare County Resource Management Agency for consideration.
AFT proposes that Tulare County adopt an explicit policy of measuring, tracking, publicizing and reducing per capita land consumption and pledges to work with county officials to implement it. More specifically, our principal recommendation for improving the draft general plan is to incorporate policies and implement mechanisms that will commit the county (and the cities within it) to making an effort to increase the efficiency of development and thereby reduce overall per capita land consumption to the extent necessary to save a specific amount of high-quality farmland that would otherwise be developed by the year 2025.

AFT has read the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) and the matrix of comments received by interested parties (including AFT) during the public comment period. The public comment period has been extended by the Tulare County Board of Supervisors until April 15, 2008.
The first public hearing for the Tulare County DEIR was held February 26, 2008. There were 39 comments made by the public that we received by the Tulare County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission.

The San Joaquin Valley Blueprint process is being conducted by the councils
of government in each of the region’s eight counties. In a series of public meetings and workshops, it will gather citizen opinion to produce a vision
of what the Valley should look like in 2050 and a “preferred growth scenario"
that identifies lands to be developed, maintained for agriculture or
preserved for nature.
