We are pleased to welcome Daniel O’Connell to our California staff as San Joaquin Valley Field Representative. O’Connell comes to us from the Sequoia Riverlands Trust, where he launched that organization’s farmland conservation program and later served as its associate director.

A native of Southern California, O’Connell is based in Tulare County. He received a Masters in International Agricultural Development from U.C. Davis and recently earned a PhD in Education from Cornell University. He has a broad base of experience working with farmers. As a Peace Corps volunteer, he worked with subsistence farmers in Africa to improve agricultural practices and quality of life. He later worked with University of California Cooperative Extension in rural agricultural communities of Yolo County. Recently, he facilitated the completion of the first agricultural conservation easements with farmers in the four-county region of the southern San Joaquin Valley.

California Director Edward Thompson, Jr., said, “Daniel is a dynamic leader who gets the big picture, but understands local hopes and concerns. He will significantly increase AFT's capacity to meet the challenge of saving farmland in the agricultural region of California, where the state and the nation can least afford to lose it."

O’Connell can be reached at doconnell@farmland.org or 559-967-1940.
