AFT—in conjunction with Stanford University, Yale University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture—convened a series of three workshops with national and international farm policy experts and leaders to obtain the highest level of scrutiny and analysis of our proposed policy recommendations.
The first two workshops, held at Stanford University, focused on agricultural conservation and commodity policy issues in the context of U.S. international trade obligations.
US Agricultural Policy: The Path to Conserving Ecological Integrity and Economic Resilience of American Agriculture
The final workshop in Washington, D.C., was designed to assess practical policies and programs that Congress could use to better sustain the economic resilience and ecological integrity of American working lands while adhering to WTO commitments.
While the previous workshops discussed the desired future goals for conservation and commodity programs, the concluding workshop took note of findings from similar efforts around the nation, focusing on a blueprint for major policy actions needed to steer future U.S. agricultural policies, and addressing specific policy options for the 2007 Farm Bill.
Papers summarizing the key discussions of the forum will be published in the spring of 2007.
