Working Lands Alliance Conference to Highlight Farmland Protection and Access to Agriculture
More than 200 farmers, conservationists, anti-hunger advocates, students, locavores, and others interested in farmland preservation from across Connecticut will gather for a conference hosted by the Working Lands Alliance (WLA) coalition to consider ways to improve farmland access, grow community farms and link farmland protection with economic development, smart growth and public health goals.

New Climate and Clean Energy Legislation Lacks Important Elements
- Boxer-Kerry Bill Doesn’t Maximize Agriculture’s Role
 in Helping Reduce Greenhouse Gasses

Yesterday Senators Boxer (D-CA) and Kerry (D-MA) officially introduced clean energy legislation in the Senate. From American Farmland Trust’s (AFT) perspective, the bill that was released falls short of what is needed to maximize agriculture’s role, but it is likely to be significantly altered over the course of coming days and weeks of debate as the Senate focuses on this issue.

$85K in USDA Funding to Help Connecticut Farms

An $85K USDA grant has been awarded to the Wholesome Wave Foundation to provide training and educational materials on risk management and market development to underserved and small-scale producers in Connecticut. American Farmland Trust along with its regional service providers will partner with the Wholesome Wave Foundation to provide the training and materials.

Blue Ribbon Commission on Land Conservation Recommends New England Farm and Food Security Initiative, and More

The commission’s principal recommendation was development of a New England Farm and Food Security Initiative to establish the region’s capacity to increase production, utilization and consumption of New England-grown farm and food products; identify barriers to and opportunities for expanding regional production and consumption; and recommend appropriate means and measures to remove barriers and achieve these goals and protect the region’s agricultural land base.
