American Farmland Trust (AFT), a national nonprofit organization working to enhance local food systems, promote environmentally sustainable farming practices and stop the loss of farmland, is seeking an energetic and accomplished financial professional to head its finance department in the Washington, D.C., national office. AFT's finance department supports all programs throughout the organization, including federal farm policy, farmland protection, state and local policy, agriculture and the environment, planning for agriculture, technical services and research.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is the second most senior financial position, reports to the Chief Financial Officer, and has responsibility for the management of a department with multiple functions (Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Reporting, Federal and State Grant Management, Contracts Administration, Cash Receipts, General Ledger, Cash Management, Benefits and Office Administration). The ideal candidate will be a strong supervisor and will have experience working in complex organizations in which the work of headquarters must be coordinated with that of staff deployed in field offices around the country.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (LIST NOT EXHAUSTIVE)
- Supervises activities of subordinates (four full time staff, one intern). Assigns work and evaluates performance
- Plans, directs, organizes and schedules the activities of multiple accounting functions
- Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of financial reports and reconciliations
- Advises administrative management as to procedures concerning expenditures and other accounting practices
- Prepares and/or directs the preparation of specialized or highly complex reports, statements, surveys or analyses for management
- Maintains accounting and budget records
- Recommends policies and procedures regarding financial and internal control issues
- Recommends alternatives to management when accounting data indicates trends or situations requiring action to be taken beyond scope of responsibilities
- Researches, analyzes and uses independent judgment in a variety of daily and non-routine decisions affecting assigned function
- Reviews statements of accounting information and other reports provided by the AFT general ledger system
- Provides internal/external training both orally and in writing on accounting systems, procedures and practices
- Provides technical advice and services to lower level accountants or other AFT staff with problems, complex issues or special projects
- Researches and evaluates new or changed accounting principles and practices
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of accounting principles, theory and practices including governmental accounting
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and techniques
- Knowledge of computerized accounting systems and applications to include mainframe systems, personal computers, and general software applications
- Skill in performing detailed and complex numerical computations and reports
- Skill in both verbal and written communication
- Must be team player and have customer service orientation to internal and external staff
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The Director of Finance must be technically proficient and an accomplished financial professional with significant experience in non-profit accounting. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following:
- CPA and Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
- At least five years of professional accounting experience, with non-profit accounting experience preferred
- At least two years experience in managing accounting staff with strong sense of teamwork and collaboration and ability to provide financial leadership
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Is organized, detail oriented and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with spreadsheet applications, database management, and accounting software. Knowledge of Solomon IV software preferred
