FUNDRAISING/DEVELOPMENT INTERN

American Farmland Trust (AFT) is a national nonprofit conservation organization working to enhance local food systems, promote environmentally sustainable farming practices and stop the loss of farmland. AFT was formed in 1980 by a group of farmers and conservationists concerned about the loss of farmland to development.

DESCRIPTION

AFT's Development Department is seeking one full-time intern (35 hours/week) for summer 2008 (beginning and ending dates flexible). While at AFT, the intern will have the ability to work on projects for the entire department and will learn about multiple facets of non-profit fundraising from events, individual and corporate fundraising, prospect research, proposal writing, etc. The position is highly administrative as most fundraising is...helping behind-the-scenes to cultivate our donors. Different aspects of the work may include correspondence to funders; mailings; planning for events; updating AFT’s donor database, identifying and researching prospective foundation, corporate and individual donor prospects and communicating research through prospect reports, memos and templates; other duties as assigned. Responsibilities will be based on performance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Organized, self-motivated, flexible college junior or senior interested in non-profits, fundraising, land conservation, and/or the environment.  Attention to detail is very important, no matter what the task.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a part-time, non-salaried internship—not to exceed 35 hours per week. The intern has the ability to earn college credit (if available from your school). He/she will be compensated and terms will be discussed upon an interview.  This is not meant to be competitive compensation, but an acknowledgement of the time the intern dedicates to this position.

There may be opportunities for professional development including workshops at the downtown Foundation Center to learn about fundraising strategies. The intern’s writing and research duties are also an opportunity to learn more about agriculture and the environment, and the supervisors will strive to give assignments of increasing challenge, based on performance and aptitude.
