Communications specialist

American Farmland Trust (AFT), a national nonprofit conservation organization working to enhance local food systems, promote environmentally sustainable farming practices and stop the loss of farmland, is seeking an energetic, self-sufficient communications specialist to join the marketing and communications department in Washington, D.C. AFT's marketing and communications department supports all programs throughout the organization including federal farm policy, farmland protection, state and local policy, agriculture and the environment, planning for agriculture, technical services and research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Communications Specialist will engage with staff across the organization to interpret and convey AFT’s work for online audiences through targeted messaging and visual content. The Communications Specialist will oversee e-newsletter and broadcast campaign programs; write and coordinate online messaging content in collaboration with departments across the organization; develop and update Web site content to support AFT's initiatives and campaigns; maintain and manage the marketing Constituent 360 database; assist in analyzing audience interests/activity and trends in order to monitor message effectiveness; support conference participation; and support consistent messaging and branding in marketing and communications products.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or related field
  • Two years experience in marketing/communications
  • One year experience in Internet-based marketing and communications
  • One year conservation, land use or agriculture-related experience
  • Proficient in online writing and messaging, AP style writing/copy editing
  • Skill in verbal communications and interpersonal relationships
  • Skill in the use of software applications, particularly Microsoft, Convio, Contribute, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, Sage editor, Web and database management tools
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage time and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of Internet tools (HTML and content management)

COMPENSATION

$38,000+ depending on experience
Full benefits package (health insurance, retirement fund, etc.)
